Kinetic Sculpture Race Traverses Land and Sea This Saturday

This Saturday, don't be surprised to see wacky, roving sculptures on the streets (and in the harbor and parks) throughout Baltimore. For the 14th year, the American Visionary Arts Museum (AVAM) is putting on the annual Kinetic Sculpture Race, a 15-mile dash across Baltimroe on human-powered sculptures. The race starts at the museum, races up to Federal Park and down through the Inner Harbor and heads toward Canton, where the sculptures must launch into the water at the Korean War Memorial and complete a loop around a dock. Next they head to Patterson Park for an obstacle course before racing back to the finish line at the AVAM. The day ends with an awards ceremony from 6-7 p.m., where racers receive awards including the "Golden Dinosaur" awarded to the most memorable breakdown or the "Grand Mediocre Champion" that goes to the sculpture who finishes in the middle of all entries. There are also some more serious awards for engineering, speed and artistic design.
